We need your help to make giving more effective

We like our supporters WE HELP CHARITABLE GIFTS get to where they're most needed. Since we launched this site in 2006, we've helped nearly 270,000 people find new, better charities to support. Good causes across the country and around the world are better off as a result.

Why we exist

It's hard for ordinary people to make informed decisions about giving to charity. Charities produce fundraising material but this, by its nature, rarely gives the full picture. There's almost no free, independent guidance helping ordinary donors give to charity effectively. That means that the best charities don't get the recognition - or cash - they deserve.

We are the only UK organisation with the sole aim of helping ordinary donors give to charity effectively.

We think that if people give effectively to good charities, those charities will flourish and the world will be better off for that. So, we provide free information to donors to help them make informed giving decisions. We also provide free advice about effective giving methods, enabling donated money go further. And we campaign on behalf of improved charity transparency, so donors can make even more informed decisions about giving.

Why we need your support more than ever

We find it hard to raise enough funds to keep going. This is especially true during lean times, and last year we faced closure due to lack of funds. Fortunately, New Philanthropy Capital have stepped in and preserved our work. We're now working on how to develop the website and have big plans for the future.* But we need your support to make sure this work can continue.

By helping donors find charities to support and by encouraging charities to improve, a donation to Intelligent Giving will have a big impact. If our work encourages the public to give just 0.1 per cent more each year, charities will benefit from £9million in extra income. And if we can encourage donors to give to effective charities, more vulnerable people will receive the help they need.

Our record so far

  • We've influenced which charities people give to
Since our launch in November 2006, our 500 charity profiles have been read over 320,000 times. One third of our readers have changed their choice of charity as a result, and 90% say they trust our opinions.

“I’ve visited your site for the first time today. I'm having a day off to remember my little boy who died seven years ago today... . I wanted to donate to a charity helping children without parents and found your site very useful in helping me to decide where to send my money. Thanks” – one of our visitors

"We just received a donation from someone who says they heard of us through your website, so that's great, thanks very much. You've given us a good write up, which we're quite chuffed about" - one of the charities we profile

"I wanted to thank you for introducing me to Tree Aid and Health Unlimited, and for reminding me why I support Save the Children. All 3 charities have benefited from your website and my cash." - one of our visitors

  • We've helped more money get where it's needed
Our giving advice provides a step-by-step explanation of how donors can get the most out of their donations - whether by taking advantage of tax exemptions or by showing how giving with friends makes everyone more generous. One in eight of our visitors gave more to charity after reading our work.

“I have just recently found you and think you are providing a great service! I have now researched many charities of interest to me (thanks to your site!) and decided I wanted to donate to several.” – one of our visitors

"I really enjoyed reading through your blog entries today, and it prompted me to think that perhaps I haven't researched my charities as well as perhaps I should have" - one our visitors

  • We've helped charities get better
Big-name charities have improved dramatically and changed the way they communicate with supporters as a result of our work. Even more charities have asked our advice on how to attract more - and better-informed - supporters. The Charity Commission has also changed the guidance it gives to charities about how to report clearly about their work.

“Congratulations on your work. Please tell your staff that they do not toil in vain and that the subjects of your frank reviews appreciate your work and take the recommendations seriously!” - one the charities we profile

"Many thanks for this [advice and information about ways to improve the annual report], which will be I am sure a massive contribution in our determination to take steps to vastly improve the quality of our reporting and communications with the outside world. We will be taking actions around your recommendations and advice." - one the charities we profile
