Ty Hafan beats Children in Need

Tuesday 10 November 2006

BARRY-BASED TY HAFAN CHILDREN’S HOSPICE has been ranked one of the country’s top 15 children’s charities, some way ahead of the BBC’s Children in Need. It was also ranked the third most professional hospice in England and Wales.

The rankings are based upon the quality and clarity of charities’ annual reports. According to Intelligent Giving, the organisation which reviews the reports, this indicates the professionalism and diligence of the charities as a whole, allowing the public to judge them more easily.

The hospice will be one of six charities highlighted on the Intelligent Giving website next week.

Intelligent Giving editor Dave Pitchford said, “This indicates that smaller charities which get relatively little airtime and funding can be as professionally run as the mega-charities – and they make a pleasing alternative for thinking members of the public.”

He added, “Ty Hafan stood out as a smaller charity with real successes which it describes in full, clear terms in its public reporting. Donors can be reassured that this is an organisation which pays full attention to the way it is run and is happy to share that information with the public.”

The top 15 children’s charities were:

1. NSPCC
2. Barnardo's
3. SENSE
4. Plan International UK
5. Young People's Trust for the Environment and Nature Conservation
6. Weston Spirit
7. Leonard Cheshire
8. The Prince's Trust
9. Medical Aid for Palestinians
10. The National Deaf Children's Society
11. St. John Ambulance
12. Whizz-Kidz
13. Save The Children UK
14. Children in Crisis
15. Ty Hafan - The Children's Hospice in Wales

Intelligent Giving - www.intelligentgiving.com - presents over 500 charities in the same way that consumer magazines cover restaurants, cars or mortgages.

Pitchford used to work at the News of the World and has applied a tabloid approach to a traditionally dull area. “The site is a consumer site,” he says. “It’s not earnest and worthy - it’s immensely practical, interesting and there’s plenty of humour.”

Charities are ranked by the quality of their annual reports, with clear references to their ethical investment policies, the money they have in the bank and their top salary. Visitors are also presented with administration and fundraising in a user-friendly way.

The site boasts a ‘Karma Calculator’, the country’s first charity shop reviewer (Alain De B’argain), plus advice on where to give things away and a roundup of the best charity credit cards.

Pitchford says, “Intelligent Giving is a one-stop shop for anyone remotely interested in where their charitable donations go. It’s also a fun read.”
