DECIDING WHO DESERVES most money here can take a lot of work (and clearly also depends on personal preference). You can blame this on the government. Although it and the Lottery hand out a lot of cash to arts organizations, the money isn't spread evenly, and funding can be sporadic. Half of all income is now from private sources.

One year, your local museum might get a big grant from Whitehall, but the next it might get nothing. This means that, when you're deciding where to give, you'll need to find out whether your chosen cause gets enough (or any) government cash, and whether it's in line for any more in the future.

 If making all these choices fills you with dread, then consider giving to a big charity that will spread your money widely, and spend it on worthy projects.

For example: The National Trust; The Royal Society for the Arts. Don’t forget that becoming a member of English Heritage – though not a charity – will achieve much the same ends.

 Your local museum or gallery almost certainly needs your help. So do your community orchestras and theatres. Giving to smaller charities also means that you've got more control of where your money goes. Google your nearest and find out how to give.
     
    ...help a particular branch of the arts
 If you're keen on a particular cultural sector, then it makes sense to channel your giving in that direction. And the good news is that there's almost certainly a charity out there with similar interests to you.
