STRONG MEDICINE FOR FORGOTTEN FOLK

This outfit brings healthcare to remote areas which have been caught up in political or military turmoil. It runs 36 projects in 489 local partner organizations and provided care for 1.4 million people in 2006/7. It appears on the right financial track, and is busily planning how to increase and improve its services. It's an organization which is getting bigger and more ambitious every year. An unusually forthcoming and readable annual report suggests good work ahead.

QUALITY OF REPORTING

What is this?
85%
How much info does the charity want to share? This score, taken from our search for 43 key points in the annual report, gives the answer. Top mark is 100%. Anything over 70% is a good effort.

SIZE OF CHARITY...

What is this?
Medium
We only profile the largest charities in England & Wales, and our sizes are relative to the largest and smallest among them. So where we describe a charity as 'Small', it is still much larger than the national average.

HIGHEST SALARY

What is this?
Under £60k
Taken from the vague bandings given in annual reports; note that 'Under £60k' could be £9k or £59k. Nonetheless the number of bars should roughly correlate with the 'Size of charity' bars.

RESERVES WOULD LAST...

What is this?
0 months
If income dried up, how long could work continue? 3-12 months is normal. Less may be precarious. 12+ months may be over-cautious (or if very high, may represent the value of the charity's property).

ETHICAL INVESTMENT POLICY

What is this?
Unknown
We asked the charity if it has an ethical investment policy. If yes, it gets an angel. Those with no policy but which don't invest in tobacco/arms get a halo. Those without investments, or who didn't respond, appear neutral. Those with stakes in arms/tobacco get a fallen angel.
The charity replies
Having developed an excellent reputation in project delivery, we have been very successful in securing large grants from the EC and DFID in the recent years. However these grants rarely fully fund projects. As a result of this sudden expansion we are keen to hear from private donors willing to support our work overseas and invest in our organizational growth or provide projects match funding. We hope that Intelligent Giving will help us achieve this.

Health Unlimited is currently raising funds for a maternal and child health project in Sierra Leone. We need to raise £170,000 before mid February for this project and its emergency obstetric care services to run for another year until funds from statutory sources become available in 2009. Sierra Leone is the poorest country in the world and has the highest maternal mortality rate in the world.
