Donors' FAQs

THANK YOU for considering a gift to us. We hope we can answer your questions.

How much of my donation goes on admin?
We don't know. We do our work by sitting in an office, bashing out this website, and meeting charity bigwigs to chivvy them along to perform better. The vast majority of your donation will go towards paying us to do this. It's extremely hard to separate the time we spend doing admin from the time we spend advancing the cause of charities' transparency.

Last year, from a total company budget of £108,000, we spent £85,000 on salaries.

How much of my donation goes on fundraising costs?
We don't know. We are a tiny organization and we don't employ fundraisers. This means we save a lot of money. On the other hand, though, all members of staff spend some of their time drumming up support, so a part of your donation will go towards paying them to do this.

How much does the boss get paid?
Our highest-paid employee takes home £27,000 a year.

What do I get in return for my donation?
Our eternal gratitude – and a place on our Wall of Fame.  A corner of our miniscule office is devoted to honouring the people who keep us going. Charles Hart, one of our current donors and author of the lyrics to Phantom of the Opera is, for example, remembered with a fetching portrait of the Phantom. You can reserve your place there with a donation. We’re not joking.

We also keep in regular contact with all our supporters - if they say they want to hear from us.

What are your plans for the future?
We want to give people an even better idea of which charity deserves their cash – and to act as a spur to get inefficient charities to reform. We’ve written more about our plans here.
